Crucial Game #3 tonight in Charlottetown

It’s as close to a must-win game as you can get.

Your Halifax Mooseheads visit the Charlottetown Islanders tonight at 7pm in Game 3 of their best-of-seven, second round playoff series with the Herd facing an 0-2 series deficit.

The Islanders stole the opening two games on Scotiabank Centre ice with a 4-3 overtime win on Friday and a 7-4 victory on Saturday despite the Mooseheads firing 44 and a season-high 51 shots at goalie Matt Welsh in the two games.

Mooseheads regular season scoring leader Otto Somppi skated again with the team during Tuesday’s morning skate and will be a game-time decision. He wore a white “no-contact’ jersey which would indicate his return is unlikely.

Head Coach Jim Midgley has not revealed who will start between the pipes for his team. Alex Gravel has started all six playoffs games for the Herd and had been solid up until he was pulled after allowing five goals on 17 shots in Saturday’s 7-4 defeat. Veteran Blade Mann-Dixon came on in relief and made 11 saves in his only playoff appearance this spring. It should be noted that Mann-Dixon went 5-1 in the regular season versus the Islanders, stopping 151 of 160 shots.

For the Islanders, star defenceman PO Joseph looks ready to return for Game 3 after leaving early on Saturday with a hand injury following a blocked shot. He participated fully in the team’s morning skate and showed no ill-effects.

Halifax has had its hands full with Nikita Alexandrov, Keith Getson and QMJHL Player of the Week Pascal Aquin who’ve combined for eight goals and 11 points. BO Groulx leads the Mooseheads with three points in the series on one goal and two assists. Filip Zadina has two goals and is the only Moose player to have scored more than once so far in the series. He is tied for second in QMJHL Playoff scoring with 11 points in seven games.

The Mooseheads will be looking to step up their game defensively tonight at the Eastlink Centre. Game 4 will be played on Wednesday night at 7pm in Charlottetown with the Mooseheads hoping to bring the series back to Scotiabank Centre for Game 5 this Friday night at 7pm.

You can listen to all playoff games live on News 95.7 with Garreth MacDonald. The Mooseheads-Islanders entire series is also being shown on Eastlink channel 610.
