GOALTENDER GRAVEL SET TO JOIN THE HERD
Goaltender Alexis Gravel has committed to joining the Halifax Mooseheads. The highly touted prospect was selected in the second round (20th overall) by the Mooseheads in June’s QMJHL Entry Draft in Charlottetown.
The native of Asbestos, Quebec was the second ranked goalie available at the draft and Halifax traded up a spot in order to get him. Gravel, along with fellow Mooseheads’ draft picks Benoit-Olivier Groulx, Jared McIsaac and Raphael Lavoie, participated in Canada’s Under 17 National Development Camp in Calgary, Alberta where the netminder had a strong showing for Team Blue.
The 6-foot-2, 196 pound 16-year-old also took part in this summer’s Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence U17 Goaltending Camp and is expected to share time between the pipes with veteran Kevin Resop during the upcoming season.
Gravel played in the GTHL for the Mississauga Senators after his mother’s work took the family to Ontario. He also suited up for Canada at the Youth Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway where he helped the team capture the Silver Medal along with Groulx and McIsaac.
General Manager Cam Russell believes the international experience will prove to be beneficial for the young goalie.
“We are excited to have a goalie of Alexis’ experience and quality join the Mooseheads,” he said.
Russell and his scouting staff liked what they saw from Gravel when watching him in action at the Youth Olympics.
“We were impressed with his poise, quickness and consistency in Norway and look forward to seeing him in a Mooseheads jersey.”
Gravel will join the team later this month for training camp at Cole Harbour Place prior to the Hub City Showcase in Moncton which runs August 19th-21st. The Mooseheads main camp will begin the following week with details to be announced soon.
