The Halifax Mooseheads will have another the talented young player on the roster for the 2016-17 QMJHL season after it was announced Tuesday that forward Nico Hischier has officially committed to the team.
The 17-year-old was selected sixth overall by Halifax in last month’s CHL Import Draft. He played 15 games at the highest level with SC Bern of the NLA this past season, scoring one goal. Hischier also had 28 points in 18 games with the Bern U20 team. The six-foot tall – 172 pound forward played internationally in both the U18 World Hockey Championship and the U20 World Junior Hockey Championship.
“We are extremely pleased and excited to have a player of Nico’s quality join the Mooseheads,” said General Manager Cam Russell.
Already considered a top prospect for the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, Hischier is the latest highly skilled player added to the Herd roster this summer that also includes Benoit-Olivier Groulx and Jared McIsaac who were selected first and second overall in the QMJHL Entry Draft.
Russell said Hischier is truly looking forward to be coming to Halifax.
“He’s happy to be coming over to North America and is excited to play for the Mooseheads.”
Hischier is expected to arrive in Halifax on August 21st.
Head Coach Andre Tourigny said Hischier is a welcome addition to the club.
“He is a complete player with experience on the big stage. He will bring offense to our team but he’s effective defensively as well.”
Tourigny was named the Mooseheads’ bench boss following Dominique Ducharme’s departure in April. The new Head Coach believes there have been many moves this summer to help the team return to being a contender.
“Nico is another huge addition on our young talented group and this is another step to pursuing the tradition of excellence of the Mooseheads.”
