Each year QMJHL teams are permitted to hand out a number of training camp invitations to free agent players in hopes of finding a hidden gem that can step in and help fill a necessary role. This summer the Mooseheads have invited eight players including four forwards and four defencemen. These players will be part of a large group to participate in week one of training camp at Cole Harbour Place starting August 17th. The Mooseheads are also set to face off in the Moncton Rookie Challenge starting on Friday, August 18th.
Brandon Yeamans – C – 1998-05-26 – Maple, ON
Yeamans is a 19-year-old center who has suited up in 11 career games for the Mississauga Steelheads. He is known for his physical play, compiling 223 penalty minutes in the last two seasons with the Mississauga Chargers of the OJHL to go along with 22 goals and 40 assists. The 5-foot-9 Yeamans is a right-handed shot and weighs 159 pounds.
Ryan Barbosa – D – 1998-01-05 – Mississauga, ON
Barbosa is a big defenceman who is a former 10th round draft pick of the Ottawa 67’s. He has spent the last two seasons with the Orangeville Flyers of the OJHL, scoring 52 points (12 goals – 40 assists) and 150 penalty minutes in 89 games. The 6-foot tall, 181 pound Barbosa is a right-handed shot.
Calum MacPherson – RW – 2000-08-28 – Antigonish, NS
MacPherson was a member of the Telus Cup Champion Cape Breton West Islanders and notched an assist on a crucial third period goal in their gold medal victory. The 5-foot-9, 161 pound winger scored 32 points (14 goals – 18 assists) in 38 regular season games in 2016-17. He added another nine points in 11 NSMMHL playoff games. He was drafted by Summerside in the third round of the 2017 MHL Draft.
Fearghus MacDonald – C – 2000-01-19 – Antigonish, NS
MacDonald is another National Champion from the Cape Breton West Islanders. He picked up 17 points (7 goals – 10 assists) in 38 games but he really became a key contributor in the postseason when he chipped in with nine points in 11 games. The right handed shooting center was selected in the 10th round of the 2017 MHL Draft by the Woodstock Slammers.
Christopher Piché – C – 2000-11-12 – Mont-Laurier, QC
Piché played at two different U16 levels last season with Newbridge Academy in Dartmouth. The 5-foot-8 center weighs 160 pounds and posted a total of 36 points (22 goals – 14 assists) in 36 regular season games.
Fabian Capparelli – D – 2000-02-27 – Laval, QC
Capparelli is a 17-year-old left-handed shooting defenceman who went undrafted in the 2016 QMJHL Entry Draft. The 5-foot-11, 161 pound rearguard has played 76 games with the Laval-Montreal Rousseau Royal in QMAAA over the last two seasons. Capparelli has scored one goal and 10 assists and has added 62 penalty minutes.
Curtis Heffernan – D – 1999-12-23 – St. John’s, NL
The 17-year-old Heffernan has spent parts of three seasons with the St. John’s Maple Leafs in the NLMMHL scoring 48 points in 71 games. He was extremely impressive in the 2017 playoffs when he had nine goals and eight assists in 10 games en route to being named playoff MVP and helping his team win a third straight provincial championship. Heffernan shoots left, stands 5-foot-11 and weighs 170 pounds.
Victor Latulippe – D – 2000-06-09 – Greenfield Park, QC
The 17-year-old Latulippe rounds out the list of players receiving invitations to camp. He is another defenceman and has spent the majority of the last two seasons playing for Rive-Sud Collège Français Espoir in QMEAA scoring 29 points (7 goals – 22 assists) in 31 games played. Latulippe is 5-foot-10 and 183 pounds. He shoots right.
