Halifax Mooseheads General Manager Cam Russell had to make a move whether he wanted to or not. Following the recent acquisition of Chicago Blackhawks prospect Jake Ryczek, the GM was left with nine defencemen on his roster which meant something had to give.
Today Russell traded Jordan Lepage to the Rimouski Oceanic in return for a 2018 first round draft pick.
The ever-savvy dealmaker made the best of the situation, not only sending the 18-year-old defenceman to a contender but to his hometown team. The first round pick received from Rimouski originally belonged to the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies. That is the very same pick the Mooseheads sent to Acadie-Bathurst in the Jake Ryczek trade on December 20th. It was then flipped to Gatineau to help the Titan land Mitchell Balmas and then sent to Rimouski by the Olympiques for Maxim Trepanier.
Lepage is in his second full season in the QMJHL and brought a physical presence to the Halifax lineup. He has 17 assists and 158 penalty minutes in 82 career games played with the Mooseheads after the team selected him in the third round, 44th overall in the 2015 QMJHL Entry Draft.
“It’s never easy to trade players but we felt it was a good spot for Jordan and we got good value in return. We feel good knowing he now gets the opportunity to play at home in front of his family,” Russell said.
The Mooseheads organization would like to thank Jordan for his time with the team and wishes him all the best in the future with Rimouski.
Halifax is now once again in possession of two 2018 first round draft picks. The Mooseheads took over top spot in the overall QMJHL standings on Tuesday night with a 4-3 overtime win in Moncton. The road trip continues this weekend in New Brunswick when Halifax visits Saint John on Saturday and Acadie-Bathurst on Sunday.
The next home game is set for Thursday, January 11th against the Charlottetown Islanders on student night at Scotiabank Centre. Tickets are on sale now at the Ticket Atlantic Box Office, select Superstore Outlets, TicketAtlantic.com, the Official Mooseheads Shop in Scotia Square or call 451-1221.
