Mooseheads Thrill Sold-Out Crowd With OT Win
Word is quickly spreading about the promising 2017-18 edition of the Halifax Mooseheads as evidenced by a sold-out crowd in Lantz, NS on Wednesday night. The jammed packed East Hants Sportsplex erupted 54 seconds into overtime when rookie Xavier Parent took the puck on the left wing and darted in front of the net to bury the game-winner as a sea of red jerseys piled onto the ice in celebration of a 4-3 victory over the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles.
DaSilva was peppered by the Mooseheads all night and faced a total of 40 shots, while Blais earned the win with 19 saves. Halifax opened the scoring when Joel Bishop tipped in a shot by Gavin Hart a little more than 15 minutes into the game. Cape Breton quickly pulled even when Kyle McGrath tallied 56 seconds later. Then with Bishop in the penalty box for holding, Hart took a phenomenal pass from New Jersey Devils prospect Jocktan Chainey and broke in alone scoring a short-handed marker on DaSilva when the puck dribbled through the crease and settled across the goal-line making it 2-1 Mooseheads with 21 seconds left in the opening period.
The 12th round pick from Truro spoke to Moose TV outside a boisterous Halifax dressing room following the game.
The only scoring in the second period came from Eagles rookie Ryan Francis. The former Cole Harbour Wolfpack star went bar down in front of friends and family 3:31 into the middle stanza to tie the contest 2-2. Francis ended the night with one goal and one assist as he picked up a helper on the McGrath goal in the first period.
Chainey had an excellent night for Halifax and showed why the Devils nabbed him in June’s NHL Entry Draft. The 18-year-old had two assists and was a driving force of the Mooseheads offensive attack. Other members of the Herd to earn assists in the win were; Patty Kyte, Barrett Dachyshyn, Arnaud Durandeau, Denis Toner and Benoit-Olivier Groulx.
Both teams wound up with 12 hits apiece as Joel Bishop and Sacha Roy each had three to lead the way. Halifax went 0-4 on the power play while the Screaming Eagles were 1-5. These teams will meet again on Friday night at 7pm as the pre-season continues at the Membertou Sport & Wellness Centre in Sydney. Halifax will also visit the Saint John Sea Dogs on Sunday afternoon at 2pm in Quispamsis, NB.
The next chance Mooseheads fans will have to catch this exciting team at home is Friday, September 8th at the Halifax Forum when the Herd takes on the Moncton Wildcats at 7pm.
