The QMJHL held the 2017 Draft Lottery on Thursday afternoon in Quebec City and the Halifax Mooseheads captured the fourth overall selection in the process. The Mooseheads did not move up or move down in the lottery, ending up with the pick they were predicted to be awarded after finishing 15th overall in the standings during the regular season.
The Rimouski Oceanic were the surprise winners of the lottery, doing so with just a 14 percent chance of claiming first overall. The Oceanic jumped past both Sherbrooke and Moncton to win the lottery.
The Halifax Mooseheads have never selected fourth overall in the history of the franchise.
The worst luck of the day belonged to the Moncton Wildcats as they fell to the third overall pick despite a tough season that saw the team endure a 25 game losing streak en route to a last place finish. The Cats held 9 of the 21 balls in the lottery which equaled a 43 percent chance of winning.
Following the draw, here is the order of the first five teams that will pick first next June:
- Rimouski Oceanic
- Sherbrooke Phoenix
- Moncton Wildcats
- Halifax Mooseheads
- Val-d’Or Foreurs
The 2017 QMJHL Entry Draft will be held at Harbour Station in Saint John, NB on Saturday, June 3rd.
