Mooseheads start preseason with 5-1 loss

Your Halifax Mooseheads opened the preseason schedule on Sunday in Cape Breton with a 5-1 loss to the Screaming Eagles at Centre 200 in Sydney, NS.

Tyler Hylland impressed the home crowd with a hat trick to help lead his team to victory. Cole Stewart notched the lone goal for the Mooseheads while Membertou’s Sonny Kabatay earned an assist on the play. A big cheer came from his family and friends in attendance when his name was announced over the arena speakers. Kabatay was picked by Halifax in the fifth round of June’s QMJHL Entry Draft.

Cape Breton jumped out to a 3-0 lead by the nine-minute mark of the opening period on goals from Alex Falardeau, Isiah Campbell and Hylland’s first of the day. Stewart got the Herd on the board at the 13:38 mark but that was all the offense Halifax could muster and they were out-shot 28-15 in the game. Hylland scored power play goals in both the second and third periods to add some insurance for the Eagles.

Cape Breton went 2-6 on the power play while Halifax went 0-5.

Cole McLaren and Joel Goguen split the goaltending duties for the Mooseheads. Goguen made the start and allowed three goals on 11 shots while McLaren stopped 15 of the 17 shots he faced. Winning goalie William Grimard had an easy day stopping two of three shots. He was relieved midway through the game by Jacob LeBlanc who didn’t allow a goal on 12 shots.
