Defenceman Justin Barron is the Halifax Mooseheads Scholastic Player of the Month for November. The Grade 10 student at Halifax West High School has impressed many with his play on the ice and his dedication in the classroom.
“It’s obviously his first year in the league and he has been flawless in adjusting to the demands of combining hockey and school. He’s just a model student,” said Mooseheads Educational Advisor Allie MacDonald.
Barron, who celebrated his 16th birthday on November 15th, joins Connor Moynihan as the first two players to capture the award this season. The Halifax native was selected 13th overall by the Mooseheads in June’s 2017 QMJHL Entry Draft. He is enrolled full-time in all four courses in French Immersion with marks sitting in the area of a 90 percent average.
MacDonald said Barron has shown excellent organization skills in balancing the life of a student-athlete which included a two-week stint away from home in November to participate with Hockey Canada in the World U17 Hockey Challenge in British Columbia.
“It’s amazing how well he is able to handle his workload and play a very level of hockey at the same time. One of his teacher’s in communications said that he is probably the best student-athlete she’s ever seen.”
Barron is putting up excellent statistics on the ice as well. He leads all 16-year-old defencemen in the QMJHL with 12 points. He has scored two goals and added 10 assists while maintaining a plus/minus rating of +10.
