Zadina’s OT tally takes down Wildcats
It didn’t take long for Filip Zadina to win the hearts of Mooseheads fans as the Czech import player scored the overtime winner in his second pre-season game in a Halifax uniform. Zadina ended the game at with 1:02 to go in the extra period on a play set up by Benoit-Olivier Groulx and the Mooseheads earned a split of the weekend series against the Wildcats with a 3-2 win.
The game was hosted by Moncton at the Dr. Carson/Marion Murray Community Centre in Springhill in what could be described as disputed territory in terms of QMJHL team loyalty for local hockey fans. No matter who the crowd was cheering for they were treated to some excellent hockey. Blade Mann-Dixon put on a display between the pipes for the Mooseheads with 35 saves to out-duel counterpart Matthew Waite who finished with 30 saves.
Halifax jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on a power play goal by Connor Moynihan and an even-strength tally from Raphael Lavoie after a nice play to set it up behind the net by Xavier Parent. The Wildcats cut the lead in half before the end of the period when Simon Le Coultre beat Mann-Dixon at 17:45. Moncton pulled even just 15 seconds into the middle period when Jacob Hudson scored. The goalies stopped everything else in regulation and the final shots were 37-33 in favour of the Cats.
Raphael Lavoie had one goal and one assist and finished the weekend with three points. Benoit-Olivier Groulx picked up a pair of assists in the win while call-up Jack McGovern also was credited with a helper.
The Mooseheads will finish the pre-season schedule next Friday night on home ice at Scotiabank Centre at 7pm against Saint John. The regular season home opener is coming up on Saturday, September 30th at 7pm vs the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. Individual tickets go on sale through Ticket Atlantic on Thursday, September 14th at 11am.
