For the second time in two weeks, the Shawinigan Cataractes took advantage of an early first period lead and held on to a narrow 4-3 victory over the Halifax Mooseheads Friday night at Jacques Plante Arena . It was the Mooseheads second loss on a tough four game road trip that continues tonight with a game against the Chicoutimi Sagueneens and wraps up tomorrow in Baie-Comeau against the Drakkar.
The Mooseheads dominated the Cataractes from the drop of the puck on Friday with Cats goalie Julien Ellis stealing the show and the victory for Shawinigan. The Cats improved their record to 12-12-0-1 on the season, while the Mooseheads fell to 13-10-1-0
Ellis, a Vancouver Canuck prospect, stopped 40 of 43 shots fired his way by the Mooseheads, including 20 in the first period. A clearly frustrated Mooseheads squad trailed the Cats 3-1 after 20 minutes depsite outshooting Shawinigan 21-11. The Mooseheads would continue to pepper Ellis, firing 22 shots through the second and third periods while limited the Cataractes to just 9 shots on Mooseheads goalie Jeremy Duchesne.
Alex Bourret, a first round draft pick of the Atlanta Thrashers, scored 2 goals for the Cataractes including the eventual game winner at 13:01 of the second period. Eric Begin, with his first of the season, and Danick Bouchard rounded out the scoring for Shawinigan.
Scoring for the Mooseheads was rookie Daniel Smith with his second of the season, Rane Carnegie with his team-leading 16th and Kevin Cormier, who continued his surprising scoring prowess with his 10th goal of the season.
The Mooseheads will return to the Metro Centre for a 2-game set next Friday, Nov.25 and Saturday, Nov.26 when the PEI Rocket and the Baie-Comeau Drakkar come to Halifax.
