MEIER MOVED AT THE DEADLINE

2016-01-06

The Mooseheads have acquired a first round pick in 2017, second round pick in 2017 and a fourth round pick in 2018 from the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies in exchange for Captain Timo Meier.

The San Jose Sharks prospect was selected ninth overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft after scoring 90 points with Halifax last season. In 150 regular season games with the Mooseheads Meier produced 160 points while adding another 26 points in 26 career playoff games.

General Manager Cam Russell has set the team up with plenty of selections for the coming years at the QMJHL Entry Draft. The team owns a trio of picks in the first round in 2016 along with two each in the second and third rounds. With today’s trade Halifax has two picks in the 2017 first round as well.

Meier was originally selected 12th overall by the Herd in the 2013 CHL Import Draft, just six spots after the team had taken Nikolaj Ehlers. He was named the Captain of the Mooseheads prior to the 2015-2016 season.

He has been with Team Switzerland at the World Junior Hockey Championship since December 12th and has yet to return to Halifax.

In another minor deal the Mooseheads nabbed an eighth round selection in 2016 from the Armada for the rights to defenceman Sam Hunter.

The deals were part of several moves made in recent weeks by Russell which included sending Danny Moynihan to ShawiniganCody Donaghey to Moncton and Cavan Fitzgerald to the Cataractes.
