The Halifax Mooseheads were active early during the QMJHL trade period on Saturday as they sent veteran defenceman Cavan Fitzgerald to the contending Shawinigan Cataractes in return for 16-year-old defenceman Jocktan Chainey and a 2016 third round draft pick.
“We’re excited to add one of the top 1999-born defencemen in our league,” said Mooseheads General Manager Cam Russell.

Chainey was selected 14th overall by the Cataractes last June in Sherbrooke after an impressive QMAAA season with Trois-Rivieres. The Asbestos, QC native has one goal and six assists in 14 games played this year and was also named to the Canada Black squad at the recent World Under-17 Challenge.
Fitzgerald has been a major point producer since making his debut with the Mooseheads and has been a steady force on the back end defensively after signing as a free agent out of training camp in 2013.
“We wish Cavan all the best in Shawinigan,” Russell said.
The 19-year-old has scored 58 points in 75 games over parts of three seasons in Halifax and has turned into one of the best offensive defencemen in the QMJHL.
“He has been a tremendous player and teammate. He is a class act.”
The Mooseheads, sitting 16th overall, continue to build for the future and Chainey will become a major part of the retooling effort. He joins a club that features other highly drafted rookies such as Arnaud Durandeau (7th overall), Walter Flower (26th overall) and Ilya Putintsev (28th overall) as players the team will be counting on for years to come.
Fitzgerald heads to Shawinigan where the Cataractes are enjoying a strong season – sitting sixth overall in the QMJHL with 45 points. The Boston, MA native will likely be paired with fellow high scoring defenceman Samuel Girard to form an exciting tandem on the power play as the Cataractes eye a run at the President Cup title.
The Mooseheads will be back on home ice on Monday, December 28th at 7pm when they entertain the Wildcats at Scotiabank Centre.
Halifax will also face off with Cape Breton in the Battle of Nova Scotia on New Year’s Eve in a game where the Mooseheads’ special game-worn jerseys will be given away and all fans will also have a chance to win a trip to see Nathan MacKinnon and the Avalanche face the Senators in Ottawa courtesy of FlyHalifax.com.
