American forward Zack Jones joins the Moose

The Halifax Mooseheads will have a familiar last name on the roster when training camp begins in August. General Manager Cam Russell confirmed on Tuesday that the team has signed forward Zack Jones to a standard player agreement and the 18-year-old will fill a spot on the team next season.

Jones (2001-03-31) is the younger brother of former Mooseheads player Cooper Jones and was originally drafted by the Herd in the 13th round of the 2017 QMJHL Entry Draft.

The Bridgewater, MA native was an All Star in the National Collegiate Development Conference last season with the Boston Junior Bandits where he scored 35 points (4 goals 31 assists) in 50 games. The NCDC is a league comprised of 16 to 20-year-old players. Jones also had 53 points (22 goals 31 assists) in 2017-18 with the U16 Boston Junior Bandits.

“I love his hockey sense, skill and ability to read the play,” said GM Cam Russell.

“It’s nice to add an 18-year-old player of Zack’s talent level to our team.”

Jones is a left-handed shooting forward who stands 5-foot-9 and weighs 154 pounds. His 35 points ranked 8th among rookies in the entire NCDC.

“I had a chance to come up to Halifax a lot over my brother’s three years with the Mooseheads and also attended camp after I was drafted. Halifax is a great organization in a very cool city,” Jones said.

“My brother loved his experience up there and when the opportunity came for me to sign I jumped on it.  I have always wanted to push myself and play at the top levels and the QMJHL is one of the best leagues in the world.  I’m really looking forward to training camp and getting started.”

Cooper Jones played three full seasons in Halifax between 2015 and 2018 mainly as a defenceman but also spent some time up front as a forward. He finished his Mooseheads career with 30 points and 98 PIMS in 172 games. He’s excited for his younger brother’s opportunity.

“Zack’s game will fit really well in the QMJHL and I know that Halifax is the best spot you can go. He is excited about it and I’m really happy for him to get started.”
