The Halifax Mooseheads announced the team roster for the 2019-20 season on Thursday as General Manager Cam Russell finalized his 22-player lineup. Among the final cuts were free agent Matt Gordon and 20-year-old Denis Toner who will return to Grand Falls in Junior A. Fellow 20-year-old Joel Bishop has decided to explore his University options.
The team will begin September with 13 forwards, seven defencemen and two goalies. That list includes 12 returning veterans while 10 will enter their first full season in Halifax. Among the rookies are Cam Whynot, a 16-year-old defencemen acquired via trade earlier this month and 16-year-old forward Cole Foston who was picked in the fourth round of June’s QMJHL Entry Draft. 17-year-old defenceman Lucas Robinson was an eighth round pick in June and is one of three new faces on the blue-line. 19-year-old Jason Horvath was added in a trade with Shawinigan this summer.
“We had a lot of kids that played well and our final choices were very difficult but we’re very excited with the group we have here,” Russell said.
Two free agent invitees cracked the squad with forwards Said Abi-Faycal and Jeff Burridge turning into pleasant surprises at camp. 2017 draft pick Gavin Hart earned a spot on the team in his third training camp with Halifax. American Zack Jones, also a 2017 draft pick of the Herd, is set for his first season in the QMJHL. CHL Import pick Senna Peeters is tied for the team scoring lead with five points in the preseason and is expected to play right wing on the second line with returning vets Marcel Barinka at center and Sam Dube on left wing.
Russell noted how he likes the mix of players that will be on the team this season.
“I think we’ve got some great veterans coming back that will be top-end players and provide great leadership, we signed a few free agents that I think are going to be able to step in and play right away and we’ve got some young kids that have really shown well throughout training camp.”
Up front the Mooseheads will be led by the dangerous line of Benoit-Olivier Groulx, Raphael Lavoie and Maxim Trepanier while returning defencemen Justin Barron, Walter Flower, Patty Kyte and Jared McIsaac give the Moose a solid back-end. McIsaac is currently recovering from off-season shoulder surgery and is expected to be out until the end of November or early December.
