The Charlottetown Islanders scored four times in the third period to inflate the final score and hand the Herd a second straight loss in a 7-2 win over Halifax.
Brett Budgell finished with two goals and one assist to lead the Isles attack while Cole Edwards also tallied twice in the game as Charlottetown upped their record to 23-16-5-0. Brendon Clavelle had three assists as seven players had multi-point outputs.
It’s the second straight loss for the Mooseheads who’s goals came from Kyle Petten and Kevin Gursoy. The Gursoy tally briefly made it a tight game as the Herd fought back from a 3-0 deficit to cut the Islanders lead to 3-2 early in the third period. The power play marker was the 13th goal of the season for the 20-year-old who was playing in his first game against his former team after Halifax acquired him on December 17th. Unfortunately for the Mooseheads they barely had a chance to celebrate the goal before Charlottetown came back down the ice and increased their lead to 4-2 only 29 seconds later on the second of the game from Cole Edwards. The Isles tacked on three more goals in the final 12:48 of regulation to make the score look a little worse than the rest of the game indicated.
Cole McLaren was tagged with the loss with 30 saves on 37 shots while Upper Tantallon’s Jacob Goobie earned the win in his first start in his hometown with 20 saves.
Halifax (16-21-2-1) will head out on the road this week and will play three games in three days starting on Friday night in Victoriaville before heading to Sherbrooke on Saturday and wrapping up the trip on Sunday in Gatineau.
The next home game for the Mooseheads will be Thursday, January 23rd at 7pm at Scotiabank Centre against the Gatineau Olympiques.
