Mooseheads camp roster down to 27 after cuts

2019-08-24

The Mooseheads continue to inch closer to finalizing a 2019-20 roster after a substantial amount of cuts at training camp on Saturday. General Manager Cam Russell reassigned 11 players to leave 27 on the camp roster which includes the injured Jared McIsaac and five overage candidates.

The latest cuts from the roster were forwards Seva Losev, Nathan MacMillan, Bryan Laureigh, Landon Miron and Merle Putnam along with defencemen William Smith, Jack McGovern, Zack Byard, and Zacharie Bordeleau. Goalies Jonathan Pickrem and Tyler Caseley were also reassigned to their Junior A teams.

To no surprise, the goaltending is set for Halifax with returning goalies Alexis Gravel and Cole McLaren. The blue-line has been paired down to nine players remaining at camp with 20-year-olds Patty Kyte, Walter Flower and Denis Toner vying for a spot alongside other returning vets such as Jared McIsaac, Justin Barron and the newly acquired Cam Whynot and Jason Horvath. Rookies Keegan Hunt and Lucas Robinson are still in the mix as well. Up front 20-year-old forwards Maxim Trepanier and Joel Bishop join Benoit-Olivier Groulx, Raphael Lavoie, Marcel Barinka, Samuel Dube, Cole Stewart, Kyle Petten as veteran Mooseheads eyeing their place on the team. Drafted forwards Senna Peeters, Gavin Hart, Cole Foston, Zack Jones and Sonny Kabatay remain at camp along with free agents Jeff Burridge, Said Abi-Faycal and Matthew Gordon.

The Mooseheads won back-to-back preseason games over the Saint John Sea Dogs with a 4-3 win on Thursday and a 4-2 victory in Saint Stephen last night. Peeters (3G 2A) and Barinka (5A) share the team lead in scoring during the exhibition season while Sam Dube and Matthew Gordon each have 3 points. More cuts will come next week and the Herd will return to action on September 6th in Moncton before wrapping up the preseason on Friday, September 13th against the Wildcats at the Halifax Forum.
