Your Halifax Mooseheads have added two players via today’s CHL Import Draft, selecting forwards Samuel Fagemo of Sweden 46th overall and Marcel Barinka of the Czech Republic 106th overall.
Fagemo, 5’11” – 190 lbs, becomes the first player from Sweden drafted by the Mooseheads since Elias Abrahamsson in 1994. He won the gold medal with Sweden at the 2016 World Under 17 Hockey Challenge where he was named a tournament all-star after scoring two goals and five assists and was one point off the tournament scoring lead. The 18-year-old went undrafted in the NHL but is currently at development camp with the Arizona Coyotes as a free agent.
“We’ve talked to the Arizona guys and they like what they see and they’re very excited about him so we’re thrilled,” GM Cam Russell said after selecting Fagemo.
Fagemo is known as a shooter and a hard and accurate wrist shot. He scored 19 goals and 11 assists in 30 games with Frolunda HC J20 SuperElit last season.
“That’s his game. He is a shooter and a goal scorer and I think if you look at his stats that’s what you’ll see. He is strong and he’s a hard worker.”

Barinka, 5’11” – 154 lbs, was the leading scorer with RB Hockey Akademie with 65 points (31 goals, 34 assists) in just 39 games where he was a teammate of the Mooseheads’ top pick in the QMJHL Entry Draft Samuel Dube. Brinka also suited up for the Czech Republic at the World Under 17 Hockey Challenge last season, scoring one goal and one assist in six games.
“With Marcel we’ve got a player who is a year younger but another guy with tremendous skill and he’s an excellent skater.”
That gives Halifax four European Import players heading into training camp with the possibility the Filip Zadina could stick in the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings and Tampa Bay prospect Otto Somppi trying to crack the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch lineup.
“The plan is to have both Fagemo and Barinka at camp and in our lineup to start the year. We will have to just wait and see what happens with Filip and Otto.”
The Mooseheads will kick off training camp in mid August with the preseason schedule set to begin on Sunday, August 19th in Cape Breton. Halifax will open the regular season on the road against Saint John on Friday, September 21st.
