World Junior Summer Showcase full of Mooseheads

The Sport Chek World Junior Summer Showcase is set to begin this weekend for Hockey Canada and several members of the Halifax Mooseheads. Four Mooseheads players will join the best Canadian hockey players under the age of 20 in Plymouth, Michigan from July 27th to August 3rd in a tournament that also features the United States, Finland and Sweden. No other Canadian Hockey League team has as many players attending the event.

Forwards Benoit-Olivier Groulx and Raphael Lavoie will join defenceman Justin Barron and goalie Alex Gravel with Hockey Canada for the event while returning World Junior defenceman Jared McIsaac received an invitation but is unable to participate due to a shoulder injury. Barron (11-15-01) is the youngest player at camp and is one of just three players participating for Canada who have yet to be drafted by an NHL team. Canada will split the 38 players into two rosters (red and white) and will play four games beginning on Tuesday, July 30th.

The Mooseheads players will be looking to prove their worth to the Hockey Canada brass who will be monitoring them from now until December when decisions will be made for Canada’s World Junior squad.  The 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship is set for December 26th to January 5th in Trinec and Ostrava, Czech Republic. Since 1977, Canada has won gold at the IIHF World Junior Championship 17 times, and collected nine silver medals and five bronze.
